Himalayan Rock Salt Lamps
Where does Himalayan Rock Salt come from?
Himalayan rock salt has its history from pre historic time when it was discovered for the
first time in the era of Alexander the Great in 325 B.C. The licking of protruded salt by
the horses of Alexander the Great, who fought battle with Raja Poras on the bank of river
Jhelum led to the discovery of Himalayan rock salt assets at Khewra.
The Khewra salt mine is the largest salt mine in the world. Salt has been mined at Khewra since 320 BC; in an underground area of about 110 sq. km. The Khewra salt mine have an estimated total of 220 million tons of rock salt deposits. The current production from the mine is 325,000 tons salt per annum. This salt range is around 300 km long and 10 to 30 km wide with an average height of 2250 feet. Its highest altitude at Sakessar Mountain is around 5000 feet. At present, there are 17 working levels at the Khewra salt mine with the cumulative length of all tunnels being more than 40 km. Some of the other salt mines in Pakistan are Kallabagh, Warccha and Jatta/B-khel.
The salt occurs in the form of an irregular dome like structure. There are several thick salt seams with a cumulative thickness of about 150 meters. At places the rock salt is 99% pure. Salt is transparent, white, pink, reddish to beef-color red. There are beautiful alternate bands of red and white color salt.
It is said that Himalayan rock salt was formed over 250 million years ago, when the energy of the sun dried up the original, primal ocean; a cycle which repeated itself for millions of years in the region therefore creating this unique type of rock salt. Himalayan rock salt is completely pristine and natural, identical in composition to that of the ancient sea. It is also said to contain the same 84 elements that are found within the human body.

Care of Himalayan Rock Salt Lamps
Himalayan rock salt is hygroscopic meaning it has the ability to draw water from the surrounding atmosphere.
In moist or humid conditions, the surface of the rock salt may become slightly wet to the touch or it may sweat, leaving salt crystals on the surface. If crystallization occurs, it can be cleaned easily by wiping the surface with a damp cloth.
When placing lamp or tea light holder on a surface which may be damaged, e.g. antique furniture, additional care should be taken to secure that surface.
Turning on the lamp or lighting a tea light for a couple of hours will dry the rock salt quickly. By doing this it will maintain a constant negative ionizing process and also repel excess moisture build up around the rock salt lamp or tea light holder.
When not in use for long periods of time place it in a plastic bag and seal tightly.
Keep safely out of reach of children and animals so it does not fall on them causing injury.
DO NOT leave the lamp on unattended.
DO NOT place lamp near water.
DO NOT turn the lamp off/on with wet hands.
